This past week has given me lots to reflect on… if you’ll pardon the pun. Beginning the week with practically no digital marketing experience I was a little nervous and uncertain of what it would entail, but the moment I first walked in Amy made me feel right at home and introduced me to the team. This is what made Reflect stand out to me, there is a genuinely supportive culture in the office.
I came into this experience hoping to gain insight into the different aspects of the digital marketing world, and I did, that experience was invaluable. Every day I shadowed someone new, given the opportunity to both sit in on meetings and do tasks. This meant I was never left twiddling my thumbs and was able to gain a real understanding of the workings of each department. However, I gained a deeper understanding of the kind of company that I would like to work for, and that is one with a team like that at Reflect.
We got stuck right in on the first day with an introduction to each department, ending with Ariane in Behavioural Science. The insight the Behavioural Science team provides is key to Reflect, and it is clear that it puts them at an advantage. Ariane was very passionate and able to make complex concepts easily digestible to us. I studied Anthropology at university and it’s the human connection side to marketing that really excites me, so I loved hearing about how understanding Behavioural Psychology drives a lot of the strategy at Reflect. We had a go at a PESTLE analysis for a client, where we looked into different topical issues that may influence buyer psychology. It was fascinating to see how national attitudes influence marketing approaches, and how much research goes into a campaign.
One of the most informative aspects of the week was attending meetings. We had the chance to sit in on a meeting from every department we shadowed. This gave us insight into discussions and tasks, as well as the way departments at Reflect and LAB work together, helping to understand the different aspects of digital intertwine. The project discussions we sat in on were very exciting, in one case we saw the analysis of website migration and rebranding. It was really interesting to hear an assessment of another agency’s work on a joint client. Other meetings included team and client catch-ups, and this bird’s eye view of the agency was key in helping me to identify which areas of marketing I feel most passionate about.
I am so grateful for my experience this week, it truly has been eye-opening! From understanding the intricacies of different departments and inter-department work to general office culture, there is a lot that I will take home from my experience at Reflect, and a lot you can take away too.
